I always thought of the Victoria Day long weekend as the beginning of summer. I know it’s weird. Don’t judge. Although they’re predicting rain this weekend, I’m willing to ignore that and think about a brunch at The Drake patio, and the cherry blossoms in High Park, to keep hope alive. Regardless the weather, there is lots to do in Toronto this Victoria Day long weekend. Indoor, outdoor, free or not, here’s my TOP5!
High Park Cherry Blossoms – This time last year, the cherry blossom buds in High Park were ready to burst. After the longest winter in Toronto’s collective memory, the white and pink petals that signal the beginning of spring have finally started to bloom, and High Park Toronto has just announced that this is the weekend to see them in full bloom. Visit as soon as you can, because rain and high winds may blow all the petals away.
Game of Thrones: The Exhibition – Get your Gaenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow costumes ready! With the show once again commencing on HBO, fans of the popular fantasy series will have the opportunity to get a close look at nearly 100 different items from the production. Costumes, weaponry, storyboards, and many other items from the first three seasons will be on display, and there will even be a few from the fourth season of Game of Thrones.
The Canadian Sport Film Festival – If you’re into sports – playing or just watching, you’ll like this. The festival is kicking off its three-day run at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, bringing together the theatre of sport and the medium of film to tell unique, provocative and passionate human stories from around the world. Showcases international films and filmmakers not typically screened or widely available.
ROMwalk: Parkdale – This Sunday join the Royal Ontario Museum for a walking tour of Parkdale. A guide will tell participants about the neighbourhood’s rich history, from its days as a suburb of early Toronto to the present. This 90-minute walk is free of charge and takes place rain or shine so bring an umbrella and meet in front of Parkdale Public Library for this free event.
Fireworks at Ashbridges Bay – What would Victoria Day long weekend be without fireworks? Show your undying loyalty to the queen (or just just hang out and watch some fireworks) at the city’s annual Victoria Day celebration at Ashbridges Bay. Oh, and if you’re planning to drive, don’t. In decent weather, this rain-or-shine event draws a crowd of tens of thousands. TTC service will be increased between Queen Street East and the Bloor-Danforth subway on the Coxwell (22A), Main (64) and Woodbine South (92A) lines.
